Renal Ultrasound
A renal ultrasound looks at the kidneys and the bladder. This test uses sound waves to make a picture of the underlying organs. The image is obtained when an ultrasound technologist presses an ultrasound transducer against your abdomen and back. This is painless and safe. An ultrasound does not expose you to any radiation. It is also not as good of an image as other forms of urinary tract imaging.
CT Urogram
A CT urogram is a specialized type of urinary tract imaging. You must have a dye injected for this test. You then lie down and pass through the CT scanner. The scanner takes a series of x-rays to visualize the organs. This test provided a better image but also involves radiation exposure. It also shows the other abdominal and pelvic organs.
Other Considerations
Sometimes both a renal ultrasound and a CT urogram are reasonable tests for a condition. A renal US is not as clear of an image but is a good option if:
- you can’t have dye
- we are worried about radiation exposure (like during pregnancy)
- you can’t tolerate being in the scanner
A renal ultrasound is also a good screening test. A CT urogram is often the “go-to-test” if
- we are evaluating blood in the urine
- worried about a cancer
- searching for kidney stones
Every situation has unique reasons that may make one type of urinary tract imaging better than another. If you have concerns or reservations about a form of urinary tract imaging, be sure to discuss it with your provider.
